St. Fidelis Ashram, Mastkot

The Catholic mission in Punjab, until the time of partition of India, was under the Diocese of Lahore which was looked after by the Belgian Capuchins. On January 17, 1952, the Holy See established and erected the Apostolic Prefecture of Jalandhar and entrusted it to the British Capuchins. Msgr. Alban Swarbrick OFM Cap. was appointed the first Prefect Apostolic.

Dhariwal station was started in 1938 by Br. Evarist, a Belgian Capuchin from Lahore. Mastkot-Kalanaur was part of St. Theresa’s Parish, Dhariwal. In 1956, Br. Lawrence, a British Capuchin took up the work, living in a rented house. In 1960, a chapel and the catechist’s house were built in Mastkot. The British Capuchins handed over Dhariwal station and all its assets to the Indian Capuchins in 1969.

Br. Edward of the Indian Capuchin Province of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was then assigned to Dhariwal. The first house of the Indian Capuchins in Punjab was established in Dhariwal by Brs. Edward and Wilfrid Mubarak.

The station remained under the management of the Indian Capuchins till it was handed over to the Diocese of Jalandhar in 1988. The Dhariwal Mission by then had become a flourishing mission station with a very vibrant Catholic community with a number of substations, many of which have been established as full-fledged parishes later.

Our brother Capuchin Bishop Symphorian Keeprath of happy memory was the Guardian of this Ashram before he was appointed the first Indian Bishop of the Diocese of Jalandhar. Mastkot and Kalanaur missions continued to be looked after from Dhariwal.

In 1972, Br. Felician started the St. Thomas Punjabi Medium School at Mastkot in memory of the 19th centenary of the martyrdom of St. Thomas, the Apostle of India. In February, 1976, Brs. Felician and Joseph Zachariah moved into Kalanaur area and developed it into a separate mission station and parish. In 1984, Br. Martin constructed a chapel in Khushipur village. The same was rebuilt by Br. Joji Plamparambil in 2009.

In 1995, an Apostolic Boarding/Hostel for boys was started in Kalanaur. Mastkot, about 6 kms from Kalanaur became its sub-station with 14 villages with a sizeable Catholic population attached to it. Carmelite Sisters (CMC) arrived in Mastkot in 1980, as collaborators in the Mission to help the school and parish ministry.

In September, 2001, a plot of land measuring 2.25 acres was purchased in Mastkot through Br. Thomas Pullatt with a view to establish a Capuchin friary cum hostel and parish church. Mastkot mission under the protection of St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen was raised into a separate parish in 2006 with Br. Joji as its first parish priest.

With no demand for Punjabi Medium, St. Thomas School had to change its medium of instruction from Punjabi to English under the Punjabi Board of Education beginning from the year 2010.

The construction of the parish church, ashram cum hostel began on January 16, 2014 and supervised by Br. Jose Stephen who also put up a grotto of Our Lady in Khushipur village and the Bishop of Jalandhar blessed the newly built beautiful Church cum Ashram and Hostel on September 24, 2015. Br. Jose Stephen took up his residence in St. Fidelis Ashram, Mastkot on October 24, 2015.

TESTAMENT OF ST. FRANCIS

The friars must be very careful not to accept churches or poor dwellings for themselves, or anything else built for them, unless they are in harmony with the poverty which we have promised in the Rule; and they should occupy these places only as strangers and pilgrims
