St. Antony’s Bhavan, Suryanagar

Surya Nagar is a residential colony in Ghaziabad on the borders of Delhi. On December 03, 1990, Bishop Patrick Nair of Meerut Diocese gave permission for the Capuchins to build a church cum residence in Suryanagar. Viewed against future prospects, two housing plots were purchased in January, 1990, when Br. Peter Celestine was the Mission Superior. The construction of two buildings began some time later.
On June 30, 1993, Br. Valerian came to Suryanagar and began pastoral ministry in the area. On December 21, 1993, Br. Xavier Vadakkekara came to Suryanagar and began the Media House, the communication apostolate of the region. Br. Michael joined him soon. On January 25, 1994, Media House was inaugurated by Br. Martin Poothokaren, the then Mission Superior.
On June 10, 1996, Br. Jacob Kaniyarasseril joined Media House as the director. In August, 1996, Media House started the MITT (Media Institute of Technology and Training) in collaboration with SVPG. All these activities are carried on by the Society for Media and Value Education which was registered in December, 1996.
The Suryanagar Church was a sub-station under the Sahibabad Parish. On January 01, 1997, Sahibabad Parish was bifurcated and Holy Redeemer’s Church, Suryanagar became an independent parish. Br. Jacob Kaniyarasseril was appointed as the first parish priest in January, 1997.
As the number of parishioners increased in Indirapuram and Vaishali, a Mass centre was started at St. Thomas School in Indirapuram (belonging to the Orthodox Jacobite Church), in August 2001, under the leadership of Br. Suresh. Holy Mass was celebrated on every Sunday at St. Thomas School. Br. Suresh was assisted by Sr. Stany and the candidates of FSMA Convent for regular Mass arrangements. We also began conducting regular Sunday Catechism at St. Thomas School in Indirapuram. In October 2001, we began organizing Basic Christian Communities and started conducting regular prayer meetings. For this purpose, the parish was divided into several units.
Franciscan Missionary Brothers upon completion of their school building provided their basement for the Mass Centre. Thus, in August 2004, we shifted the mass centre from St. Thomas School to St. Francis School in Indirapuram. A plot of land was purchased under the leadership of Br. Agin for constructing a Church in Indirapuram. The said plot was purchased for the diocese of Meerut.
In November 2012, Faridabad Diocese (Syro-Malabar) established a new Syro-Malabar Parish in Vaishali to cater to the pastoral needs of Syro-Malabar community under the territory of Suryanagar Parish. A few of our parishioners shifted to the newly established Parish. In 2013, a temporary Church was erected in the newly bought plot in Indirapuram. In July 2014, Holy Redeemer’s Church Suryanagar was divided, and a new parish was erected in Indirapuram. The territory of the newly established parish consists of Vaishali, Vasundhara and Indirapuram. The territory of Suryanagar Church was limited to Brij Vihar, Ramprastha, Kaushambi, Maharajpur and Suryanagar.
Initially, when the Surya Nagar center was opened, it was known as Media house, as Br. Xavier, the founder-director, was mostly involved in matters pertaining to the media. In 2008, the name of the house was changed from Media House to St. Antony’s Bhavan. Until then, the community was named Media House since the publishing department of the Province functioned from Suryanagar.
Shramik Vidyapeeth, Ghaziabad (SVPG) which is now renamed Jan Sikshan Sansthan (JSS) is a vocational training and continuing education centre under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Govt. of India, entrusted to St. Paul’s Educational and Charitable Society as its parent body. This polyvalent project for the multifaceted service, animation, training and development of the urban and poor youth, was initiated in our province by the hard work of Br. Xavier Vadakkekara in 1994. The Provincial is the Chairman of JSS.
Hundreds of young boys and girls from socially backward and economically poor background have already been trained in job oriented courses which are nearly 30 in numbers. It has its registered office at Suryanagar and two branches in Ghaziabad and Hapur. SVPG/JSS started functioning in our Suryanagar house above the present church. It was inaugurated by Bp. Patrick Nair on October, 1994. Since 2018 JSS has shifted its functioning area and office from Suryanagar to Ghaziabad, leaving the place convenient for parish acivities.

TESTAMENT OF ST. FRANCIS

The friars must be very careful not to accept churches or poor dwellings for themselves, or anything else built for them, unless they are in harmony with the poverty which we have promised in the Rule; and they should occupy these places only as strangers and pilgrims
