St. Francis, Batala

St. Francis Friary, the Capuchin foundation in Batala, had its origin in 1970 when Br. Hyacinth bought two kanals of land and started staying in a rented house looking after the pastoral needs of the people. Br. Martin Poothokaren constructed a multipurpose hall which was used for the Sunday liturgy and as residence of the friars.

In 1980, five acres of land along the Jalandhar road in Batala was bought through the efforts of Brs. Isaac, Martin and Abraham to start an English Medium High School affiliated to the ICSE. On March 11, 1982, the school was blessed by Bishop Symphorian and inaugurated by the then Provincial Br. Raymond. Br. Simon Kottoor was the first principal of the school and Br. Isaac the first resident Parish Priest and Manager of the school. St. Francis Friary was designed and built in 1988 by Br. Simon Kottoor. In 1982, a community of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary (SCJM) was established in the school premise to assist in the parish and school.

The construction of the parish church was started on April 30, 2000 and was blessed on September 13, 2001.

TESTAMENT OF ST. FRANCIS

The friars must be very careful not to accept churches or poor dwellings for themselves, or anything else built for them, unless they are in harmony with the poverty which we have promised in the Rule; and they should occupy these places only as strangers and pilgrims
