Jyotiniketan, Masuri – February 25, 2025

The Capuchin friars of the Krist Jyoti Province, engaged in pastoral ministry across North India, gathered at Jyotiniketan, Masuri, for a day-long Pastoral Orientation Seminar. The event, graced by the presence of Rt. Rev. Dr. Ignatius D’Souza, Bishop of Bareilly, was a profound opportunity for the friars to reflect on their ministry, draw inspiration from the life of Jesus, and equip themselves to face the challenges of the modern world.

The seminar, meticulously organized, began with a warm welcome and invocation of the Holy Spirit, setting the tone for a day of spiritual enrichment and practical insights. The program was divided into three sessions, each addressing critical aspects of pastoral ministry.

Inaugural Session: Embracing the Challenges of Ministry
The day began with a heartfelt welcome by Br. Simon Neelanirappel, the Vicar Provincial of Krist Jyoti Province. He introduced Bishop Ignatius D’Souza and emphasized the importance of such gatherings for the friars to reflect on their pastoral work and draw strength from one another.
Bishop D’Souza, in his keynote address, delved into the challenges faced by Jesus during His ministry and drew parallels to the struggles faced by priests and religious today. He highlighted five key challenges:

  1. Rejection by His own people – A reminder to persevere despite opposition.
  2. Temptation by Satan – The importance of relying on Scripture to resist temptation.
  3. Opposition from religious leaders – The need to remain steadfast in the face of criticism.
  4. Misunderstanding by His disciples – The value of patience and compassion in teaching others.
  5. Agony and betrayal – The call to trust in God’s will, even in moments of despair.

The bishop’s personal anecdotes, including the inspiring story of a nun who overcame rejection through faith and perseverance, left a lasting impression on the participants.

Second Session: Pastoral Prudence in a Polarized Political Climate
The second session addressed the pressing need for pastoral prudence in the current political scenario of North India. Bishop D’Souza highlighted the challenges of religious polarization, anti-conversion laws, and socio-economic disparities, urging the friars to navigate these complexities with wisdom and courage.

Drawing from Matthew 10:16, he emphasized the need to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” He encouraged the friars to avoid partisan politics, promote justice and peace, and engage in interfaith dialogue to foster communal harmony.

The bishop also invoked the example of St. Francis of Assisi, whose life of peace and reconciliation serves as a model for pastoral ministry. He concluded with a powerful reminder from James 3:17, urging the friars to seek the “wisdom from above” – a wisdom that is pure, peaceable, and full of mercy.

Third Session: The Power of Prayer and the Holy Spirit in Ministry
The final session focused on the indispensable role of prayer and the Holy Spirit in pastoral ministry. Bishop D’Souza stressed that effective ministry is not about human strength but about divine empowerment. He encouraged the friars to prioritize prayer, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and nurture the spiritual gifts of their congregations.

Practical tips were shared to cultivate a deeper prayer life, including dedicating specific times for prayer, practicing listening prayer, and preaching in the power of the Holy Spirit. The session concluded with a call to renew their commitment to prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit, as outlined in Ephesians 6:18.

Conclusion: A Day of Renewal and Inspiration
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Br. Suresh Mathew, who expressed gratitude to Bishop D’Souza for his insightful guidance and to the organizers for creating a space for reflection and growth.

The Pastoral Orientation Gathering was more than just a seminar; it was a spiritual retreat that rejuvenated the friars and equipped them with the tools to face the challenges of their ministry. As they returned to their respective missions, the friars carried with them a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by the life of Jesus, the wisdom of the Church, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

This gathering was a testament to the Capuchin friars’ commitment to their pastoral mission and their unwavering dedication to serving God and His people. May their ministry continue to bear fruit, bringing hope, healing, and transformation to the communities they serve.

Discussion of Pastoral Work
In the afternoon, an hour was set aside for an interactive discussion session, moderated by Br. Simon Neelanirappel, the Vicar Provincial of Krist Jyoti Province. This session provided a platform for the friars to openly share their experiences, challenges, and insights related to their pastoral work. It was also an opportunity to brainstorm meaningful initiatives as a province as part of celebrating the Jubilee Year 2025.
